Converting A VAN INTO A MINIBUS

In the UK, converting a vehicle into a mini bus—whether it’s a light mini bus (up to 12 passengers) or a larger mini bus (13 passengers and above)—requires careful adherence to legal regulations to ensure both safety and compliance. Drivers of converted mini buses must hold a Category D1 driving licence if the vehicle has between 9 and 16 passenger seats (excluding the driver), or a Category D licence if the vehicle has more than 16 seats. Additionally, all mini bus conversions must undergo Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) to ensure the vehicle meets the necessary safety and environmental standards. This process includes an M1 crash test to ensure that the vehicle’s structure and seating arrangements are safe in the event of an accident, protecting both the passengers and the driver. For wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs), the conversion must also comply with accessibility standards, and the wheelchair lifts or ramps must be installed according to regulations set out by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency).
